Vietnamese smokers face high health risk

Smoking claims about 40,000 lives in Vietnam each year and if effective measures are not taken, the death toll may rise to 70,000 within the next 20 years

On May 16, the Ministry of Health (MOH) launched “the National Week without Smoking” from May 25 to 31 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Luong Ngoc Khue, head of the MOH Health Examination and Treatment Department, said Vietnam is one of the 15 countries with a very high rate of male smokers (15 million adult smokers).

It is estimated that the country spends VND14trillion (US$ 667 million) annually for buying tobacco and over VND2 trillion for treatment of tobacco-related diseases including chronic asthma, lung cancer and myocardial infarction, according to reports shown at the seminar.

Recent research shows that cigarette smoke contains up to 7,000 toxic substances, including at least 70 carcinogens. Not only smokers but also people around them are at high risk of getting cancer.

According to research conducted at the National Cancer and Tumor Hospital (K Hospital) in Hanoi, the risk of getting cancer for 6-month smokers is 6.5 times higher than in non-smoking people. Kids in families with smokers face risk of catching pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma and sudden death, eight times more than children from non-smoking families.
