HC: Enforce tobacco ban near schools
TNN | May 19, 2011, 06.24am ISTNEW DELHI: Unhappy over the tardy progress in enforcing the ban on sale of tobacco products near schools and hospitals, Delhi high court on Wednesday asked the city government and Delhi Police to implement its directions. A division bench rejected the affidavit filed by the police claiming it had launched a drive to prosecute offenders.
Lamenting the lack of serious effort, the bench noted that "it doesn't look like vital aspects have been touched. We are at a loss... it seems that the police commissioner and the chief secretary have shown complete apathy to court directions."
Earlier, the HC had asked the police chief to book those selling tobacco products within the prohibited 100-yard radius area of schools, colleges and hospitals , and seal such shops. "Any transgression of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003 shall be dealt with strict punishment . The law has to be strictly implemented," the bench had observed.
