Ministers block tobacco firms from helping to clean up the 122 tons of cigarette butts, packets

dailymail.co.uk – 16 de Agosto de 2015 – UK
Ministers have told councils not to accept help from the tobacco industry to clean up the 122 tons of cigarette butts, packets and matches dropped in the UK every day.

In what has been seen as an apparent U-turn by the Government, a junior Environment minister last month rejected the offer by cigarette companies to provide money for cleaning Britain's streets.

It came six months after Kris Hopkins, then a Local Government minister, said he wanted tobacco companies to 'make a contribution to put right the wrongs as a consequence of their product.

E-cig house fire prompts safety warning

iwcp.co.uk – 29 de Julio de 2015 – UK

E-CIGARETTE users on the Isle of Wight are being warned to be careful when charging vaping devices and other electrical items following a fire at a house in East Cowes on Sunday.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service put out the warning after they were called to the property to extinguish a burning sofa.

The fire was caused by an e-cigarette charger, which had been charging a vaping device on the arm of the sofa.

"Thankfully, the property had working smoke alarms installed and were alerted to the fire in time for us to rescue a man and two dogs," said a spokesman for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

"Advice has been issued nationally to e-cigarette users, following reports of several devices exploding while charging, which caused minor fires.

"It is not an apparent problem locally, but around the country other fire services have reported incidents of fires caused by e-cigarettes and we don’t want any more such incidents happening on the Island."

E-cigarettes have now been banned from most British trains, stations and platforms despite it being totally legal

startribune.com – 12 de Junio de 2015 – UK
If you’re an ex-smoker who enjoys a cheeky e-cig while waiting for your train, you might be dismayed by this sign that has popped up in train stations across Britain this week.

It is telling anyone who stops to read it that Southern Railways will ban e-cigarettes on all their 2,500 train services and 156 stations from July 26.

But what is particularly striking about this ban is how most of Britain’s train companies have also quietly banned e-cigarettes – despite it not being illegal to vape in public places.
