No tobacco use on County grounds

Murray County Sole Commissioner Brittany Pittman approved a second reading of an ordinance prohibiting tobacco use on county property.

“It’s for the health and safety of those that enter into the facilities and for those who work in those facilities each and every day,” Pittman said. “You will see the signs out on all the county property. When we were doing our research on this, it shows that smoking and tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the U.S...so anything that we can do to try and mitigate those risks we will do.”

Scientist at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) talks tax and price polices for tobacco

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has produced a handbook detailing the scientific evidence on tobacco pricing and tobacco control entitled: Effectiveness of Tax and Price Policies for Tobacco Control. This was volume 14 in a series of IARC handbooks on cancer prevention. Maria Leon Roux was the IARC scientist who oversaw its development, as part of the PPACTE consortium, an EU-funded project. Leon Roux talks to youris.com about tobacco pricing policies and control of tobacco in Europe.

State Health Dept.: Tobacco Sales to Teens Reached Lowest Numbers in 14 Years
The State Health Department says that tobacco sales to teens has reached its lowest numbers in 14 years.

A new report credited the drop to the Adolescent Tobacco Use Prevention Act, which makes it difficult for teens under the age of 18 to buy cigarettes.

The report states that under the program, smoking among New York high school students decreased 53 percent between 2000 and 2012.

Since 1997, the state levied $28 million in fines against thousands of retailers caught selling tobacco to minors.

In December, one of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's final acts was to raise the age to buy cigarettes in New York City from 18 to 21.
