Youth Tobacco Survey Shows Less Smoking, More E-cigarette Use Among NC Teens

The 2013 N.C. Youth Tobacco Survey, released last month, delivers both good and bad news to those working to prevent tobacco use among North Carolina students. Results show the lowest teen cigarette smoking rates ever recorded, along with a significant increase in teen use of certain non-cigarette tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes and hookahs (water pipes).

kid stop smokingCigarette smoking among North Carolina middle school students dropped 40 percent from 2011 to 2013, falling from 4.2 percent to 2.5 percent. Among high school students, the drop was 13 percent, from 15.5 percent to 13.5 percent.

However, current use of electronic cigarettes among North Carolina high school students jumped by 352 percent from 1.7 percent in 2011 to 7.7 percent in 2013. Ten percent of high school students said they are considering using electronic cigarettes in the next year and 10.6 percent of high school students are considering hookah use in the next year.

“We celebrate the decline in cigarette smoking; however this trend toward other tobacco use and dual use of tobacco products is a real cause for concern,” said Dr. Ruth Petersen, chief of the Chronic Disease and Injury Section in the N.C Division of Public Health. “Nicotine in these tobacco products is highly addictive, and there is evidence that using nicotine during adolescence may harm brain development.

Flavoured tobacco popular with Canadian teens: survey

Half of the teenagers who smoked in the past month used a flavored tobacco product, according to a survey on youth smoking habits in Canada.

The survey, done by the Propel Centre for Population Health Impact at the University of Waterloo, on behalf of Health Canada, discovered that 50 per cent of high school students who had used tobacco within the past 30 days used flavored products.

That equates to half of the high school students (15 and over) who used tobacco products in the month before the survey was taken, or 137,000 students, the report noted.

'Troubling' number of high school students use flavored tobacco: Canadian Cancer Society
The number of high school students who have used flavored tobacco products is "troubling" and new legislation banning the sale of it is needed immediately, the Canadian Cancer Society says.

In the 2012/13 Youth Smoking Survey, 50% of high school students who had used tobacco products in the 30 days before being polled said they had used flavored tobacco products, which can include cigarillos, water pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff and menthol cigarettes.

Boys were slightly more likely than girls to use flavored tobacco products, 53% compared to 46%. As well, 29% of those using flavored products said they smoked menthol cigarettes.

The survey of 47,203 students in every province except Manitoba and the territories was conducted between Nov. 2012 and June 2013 by researchers at the University of Waterloo and released Wednesday by the society. It also showed 12% of students had smoked cigarettes in the 30 days before the poll and 18% had used tobacco products in general.

‘Voice of Tobacco Victims’ asks Punjab govt to make cigarettes costlier

CHANDIGARH: With Punjab cabinet deciding to take a relook at the value added tax (VAT) structure in Punjab last week, 'Voice of Tobacco Victims', which is an anti-tobacco campaign fighting against the menace of tobacco, has asked the state government to make cigarettes costlier.

"According to Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) India, about 24 lakh people in Punjab use tobacco and about 14 lakh use smokeless tobacco. Of these tobacco users, over 9 lakh will die untimely death due to tobacco and a major part of those dying from cancer will be tobacco users," said Punjab patron Dr Prahlad Duggal, in a memorandum to the government on Monday.

It is true that the state government earns lot of revenue from the sale of tobacco products. But the social and financial cost of so many deaths caused by tobacco is far greater than this revenue collected. It is also much more than the employment generated from tobacco industry.

Vitamin C Supplementation for Pregnant Smoking Women and Pulmonary Function in Their Newborn Infants: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Half of smoking women who become pregnant continue to smoke during pregnancy, with adverse effects on fetal lung development because of in utero exposure to tobacco products. Given the challenges of reducing smoking during pregnancy, this study sought to determine whether administration of vitamin C protects human lung development in utero. In this randomized trial, pregnant women in the active group received 500 mg daily of supplemental vitamin C. The primary outcome of interest was newborn infant pulmonary function tests of (PFTs), with secondary outcomes including incidence of wheezing during the first 12 months of life as well as PFT results at 1 year.

The women were enrolled at 3 different clinical sites in North America during 2007-2011. All were current smokers, defined as smoking at least 1 cigarette in 24 hours. The women were randomly assigned at ≤ 22 weeks of pregnancy to an intervention group (n = 89) or placebo (n = 90). All study mothers had declined smoking cessation efforts. A group of pregnant nonsmoking women were studied as a comparison group. Both smoking groups received brief counseling about cessation of smoking at each prenatal visit, and prenatal visits occurred at standard intervals. Newborn PFTs were obtained in the first 72 hours of life, when the infants were asleep. Follow-up PFTs at 1 year were obtained in 67% of the infants. Wheezing in the first 12 months of life was assessed by research personnel who administered a questionnaire to the family.

KSA acts to reduce harmful effects of tobacco products

Commerce Minister Tawfik Al-Rabiah refuted rumors via Twitter that there would be a hike in tobacco prices in the Kingdom.

The Kingdom will, however, increase the specifications of tobacco products to minimize its harmful effects on smokers, the minister said on Saturday.

The Kingdom joined the anti-tobacco agreement in May 2005.

Saudi Arabia ranks fourth in the world for tobacco imports and consumption. More than 15 billion cigarettes, worth $168 million, are smoked by Saudis each year, according to figures released by the Gulf Cooperation Council’s Health Ministers Council.

The minister stressed that decisions on price increases are taken by the GCC Finance Ministers Council.

“The Kingdom has not given any signal for the increase in the price of tobacco products,” the minister added.

The Ministry of Health, in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Atlanta-based Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will launch a Kingdom-wide survey on adult smokers by September, according to Ali Alwadey, director-general of the ministry’s tobacco control program.

The director-general said that the study will be conducted among 8,000 families living in different parts of the Kingdom.

“The survey will help authorities plan out future programs on combating smoking and will cover all age groups and people from all walks of life,” he said. He also said the ministry has gotten approval to conduct the survey.

Alwadey said that the study will be carried out over a period of eight months and that the report will be available for decision-makers and planners soon after it is presented to the Ministry of Health.

The Health Ministry has launched a mobile service to assist smokers in kicking the habit.

“We have deployed 10 mobile units that will visit all parts of the Kingdom in the next 12 months to assist smokers to unlearn their habit,” he noted.

He said the mobile service would visit malls, parks and other public places most frequented by smokers to tell them about the hazards of the habit and how to give it up.

Tobacco Consumption High among Indian Females: Government

More than 20 percent of India's female population consumes tobacco, the Union government stated on Tuesday.

As per the findings of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), conducted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (2010), 20.3 percent of females - 15 years and above - consume tobacco in some form or the other.

The use of smokeless forms of tobacco is more prevalent (18.4 percent) among females than smoking forms (2.9 percent), Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan pointed out in Rajya Sabha.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) says that over half of all oral cancers in Asia are caused by tobacco.

Based on the data provided by the National Cancer Registry Programme, the estimated number of new cancer cases for 2035 is about 1.9 million, Harsh Vardhan said.

Exposure to tobacco websites linked with increased chances of smoking initiation

Teens and young adults who are exposed to marketing materials for tobacco products, such as coupons and websites, were far more likely to begin smoking or to be current smokers than those not exposed, finds a new study in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

"For several years, the emphasis in the tobacco industry has been on this sort of direct marketing, especially to young people who are highly price sensitive and who may find coupons, samples, and promotions appealing," said lead author Samir Soneji, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice.

Teens Who Try E-Cigarettes Are More Likely To Try Tobacco, Too

While electronic cigarettes may be marketed as alternatives that will keep teenagers away from tobacco, a study suggests that may not be the case.

Trying e-cigarettes increased the odds that a teenager would also try tobacco cigarettes and become regular smokers, the study found. Those who said they had ever used an e-cigarette were six times more likely to try tobacco than ones who had never tried the e-cig.

Researchers from the Center for Tobacco Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, analyzed data from the 2011 and 2012 National Youth Tobacco Survey, a federal questionnaire administered to students in grades 6 through 12 in middle and high schools nationwide. It asked teenagers whether they smoked electronic or tobacco cigarettes or both.
