Pennsylvania's new $1-per-pack tax on cigarettes, along with the commonwealth's first taxes on e-cigarettes, roll-your-own, and smokeless tobacco, are important steps toward reversing this epidemic.

Higher Cigarette Taxes Associated with Lower Infant Death Rate

voanews.com – 1 de Diciembre de 2015 – EEUU

Governments impose taxes on cigarettes in part as a public health measure, to encourage people to stop smoking. But a new study suggests the high cost may also lead to lower infant mortality.

Higher cigarette taxes are already associated with lower rates of smoking during pregnancy, and fewer health problems for newborns, such as low birth weight, prematurity and birth defects. This study, published in the journal Pediatrics, is the first to evaluate the impact of those taxes on infant mortality rates in the US.

The account is projected to have a $14.6 million shortfall by 2018.

WEST VIRGINIA TOYS WITH RAISING TOBACCO TAXES

nacsonline.com – 17 de septiembre de 2015 – EEUU

CHARLESTON — West Virginia, which has one of the lowest tobacco tax rates in the United States, might consider increasing tobacco excise taxes in an effort to offset the state’s dismal budget, the Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports. Currently, West Virginia has a 55-cent per pack tax on cigarettes.

“There’s room on the tobacco side,” for higher taxes, said state delegate Eric Nelson, who participated in a legislative session on alcoholic beverages, gambling and tobacco products. Nelson pointed out that any hike would include e-cigarettes, which are not subject to state tobacco taxes at present. “E-cigarettes are a growing segment that needs to be looked at. … We’re significantly below other states. It has become an issue,” he said.

The state falls short in efforts to reduce suffering and death from tobacco use, the report finds. It argues that a greater percentage of the tobacco tax dollars should be dedicated to cessation programs.

"Just over 8,300 people are going to be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015 (in Michigan)," said Andrew Schepers, spokesman for Cancer Action Network in Michigan. "Just over 6,000 people are going to die from it.
