War against tobacco begins on Monday

thehindu.com – 10 de Abril 2016 – India

From Monday, Tamil Nadu will begin implementing the Central government notification mandating that all tobacco products carry a health warning covering 85 per cent of their packaging.

It’s been a week since the notification came into effect, but as of Friday, cigarette packets sold in the city still had the old warnings — showing a diseased lung and covering only 40 per cent of the display area.

“We received the notification on Thursday and are communicating it to all district-level officers in the State. From Monday, we will start implementation — our teams will carry out inspections and seize any products that do not adhere to the notification,” said Director of Public Health K. Kolandaisamy.

China's capital bans indoor smoking, but tobacco is ingrained in nation's life

pri.org – 4 de Junio de 2015 – China

And that's one problem with Beijing's latest attempt, announced this week, to ban indoor smoking in the capital city of the world's biggest manufacturer and consumer of tobacco.

"You have to light a cigarette just to get familiar with an interviewee,'' says Vincent Ni, of the BBC's China Services. "If two guys smoke, I will trust him further, and he will trust me further. And I'll get my stories."

It's important at times even to pretend to be a smoker, says Ni, a social smoker. "It's a show of your masculinity," he says. "If you go out with a bunch of guys, the first question is, 'Why don't you smoke,' right? It's part of the culture."

Reynolds Tobacco Co. and its smokeless tobacco subsidiary the American Snuff Co. that asked the agency to revise warning labels on smokeless tobacco products.

Healthcare workers shocked over removal of tobacco warnings in films

indystar.com – 13 de Abril de 2015 – India

Healthcare providers and advocates for a tobacco-free society claim they are shocked at the latest plan of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to replace health warnings shown during movie scenes showing smoking.

“Leading film-makers in the country have submitted a representation to the government to withdraw the requirement for cinema halls to run a warning scroll whenever smoking scenes are shown on the screen,” said Voluntary Health Association of India director Seema Gupta.

She added that current film rules have been extremely effective in deglamorizing the use of tobacco in films.

“We should not succumb to pressure by the film industry,” Ms. Gupta added.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had in 2012 brought out a notification prohibiting smoking in films. Later, amended rules came into effect to remove practical difficulties faced in implementation of some erstwhile provisions.

Gwynn’s death prompts proposal to ban smokeless tobacco at MLB games

fox5sandiego.com – 25 de Febrero de 2015 – eeUu

SACRAMENTO –Major League Baseball players could be banned from using chew or any tobacco products at games in California under a new bill.

Smoking is already banned in MLB stadiums, but the use of smokeless tobacco, is not. Bay area Assemblyman Tony Thurmond authored the bill and said the issue was highlighted by the death last June of former San Diego Padres All-Star Tony Gwynn.

“I’m hopeful that this bill will lend to his legacy, that it will help to prevent illness for young people and young athletes.” Thurmond released in a statement. “The use of smokeless tobacco in baseball, at any level and in any location, sets a terrible example for the millions of young people who watch the game and far too often see their favorite players using snuff, dip or chew. We have a great opportunity to protect our players and stand up for kids by getting tobacco out of the game.”

Gwynn believed his oral cancer was linked to his longtime chewing tobacco use. Last year, former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said he was diagnosed with cancer, which he said he believed, was related to his use of smokeless tobacco.

Grocery store chain to stop tobacco sales

news10.net – 16 de Febrero de 2015 – EEUU

You won't find cigarettes and tobacco chew on the store shelves of Raley's, Bel Air and Nob Hill Foods by the end of February, according to Raley's.

The West Sacramento-based grocery store chain has made the decision to cease sales of tobacco products to promote health and wellness.

Many customers in the parking lot of the Natomas Boulevard location on Friday thought the news was positive.

"Being a non-smoker, it doesn't affect me, but being around second hand smoke can be a little bit annoying, so I think it's a good move," shopper Robert Stevenson said.

Smaller liquor stores nearby are looking forward to possible sales coming their way.

"It'll help us a little bit you know," Select Wine & Spirits manager Manny Gaara said.

Smokers on the other hand are not as happy.

"The fact that they're not selling tobacco products anymore its actually kind of disappointing," Branden Hooker said. "I think for some reasons, it could be good for those who don't smoke. But honestly, for people who do, its going to be a lot harder."
