New Delhi, May 22 (PTI) Admitting that anti-tobacco laws were being followed only to a limited extent, Health Ministry today said it has written to Information and Broadcasting Ministry for complete implementation of rules to prevent promotion of cigarettes and tobacco products through advertisements and sponsorships. Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said he has also written to the Chairman and CEO of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCA) for implementation and monitoring of the these rules. "The Ministry has written to I and B Ministry for further direction to subordinate offices for taking appropriate action for the implementation of the rules," he said in a written reply to a question. The Minister was replying to queries on steps taken by the government to ensure compliance of provisions of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Rules, 2011. He said the rules at present were being followed only to a limited extent and the two Ministries were trying to minimise practical difficulties for ensuring complete implementation of rules. Answering another query, the Minister said the government is planning to set up a separate Central Drug Controller for AYUSH drugs. "To ensure quality and standards of ayurveda, siddha and Unani medicines and effective enforcement of provisions of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, a Committee chaired by Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) recommended creation of separate Central Drug Controller for AYUSH drugs," he said.
