Tobacco display ban welcomed in Coventry
ANTI-SMOKING campaigners in Coventry have welcomed plans to ban supermarkets from displaying tobacco from next year.
Smaller shops such as newsagents will also have to conceal their cigarettes, but will be given until 2015 to meet the new regulations, under government proposals released yesterday – No Smoking Day.
The plans were welcomed by city officials who hope they will help to cut the number of smokers.
Coun Joe Clifford, chair of Coventry’s Smokefree Alliance, said: “The ban on tobacco displays in shops is fantastic news.
“Over the last few years tobacco displays in shops have become bigger and brighter than ever and acted as a huge advertising wall for smoking, particularly to young children.
“This announcement will play a vital part in encouraging young people to choose not to start smoking in the first place.”
The national ban on smoking in public places has been credited with saving Coventry more than £225,000 in reducing smoking-relating heart attacks alone since 2007. It is hoped new “under the counter” laws could have a similar impact.
The tobacco control plan sets new targets to reduce the number of adult, under age and pregnant smokers by the end of 2015.
Ministers have also promised a consultation on plain cigarette packets to end brand marketing.
