Press release submitted by Center for Alcohol & Drug Services, Inc.
March 23rd , 2011 will mark the 16th Annual Kick Butts Day. This day is designated for youth who want to expose Big Tobacco. This term refers to the large tobacco companies who advertise their tobacco products toward teenagers by placing advertisements in magazines they read and paying millions of dollars to have their favorite actors/actresses smoke on film. Youth across the nation are exposing these tobacco companies by revealing their lies and manipulation through speaking out. They're spreading the word about how tobacco is the number one cause of preventable death and disease in the United States.
D.F.Y.I.T. (Drug Free Youth In Touch) chapters will be participating in activities to speak out against Big Tobacco. Williams Intermediate School will be hosting a display table during lunches where they will display many of the ingredients in tobacco products that are also in our everyday household items such as: arsenic (rat poison), acetone (nail polish remover), cadmium (batteries) stearic acid (candle wax) acidic acid (vinegar), just to name a few. The students will have a sign near their table that reads "What do these ingredients make?" Students will then be able to guess what all of the ingredients are in, and be entered into a drawing to win a prize at the end of the day.
Central's JEL (Just Eliminate Lies) chapter will be participating in a similar lunch time activity for Kick Butts Day. They will have a table with ingredients, handing out information about the harmful effects of tobacco, and handing out JEL giveaways for students who are able to answer questions about the display.
Sudlow's chapter of D.F.Y.I.T./JEL has decorated T-shirts with tobacco facts to wear the day of Kick Butts Day to help to educate their peers on the dangers of tobacco. They are also using their chain length fence outside of their school as a canvas for a tobacco free message for all students and passer bys to see. They will be using cups in the fence to display the words "Tobacco Stinks."
Other D.F.Y.I.T. and JEL chapters will be participating in Kick Butts Day as well by making anti-tobacco posters to send out their message.
