What ban? Tobacco ads continue

PATNA: Government proposes, tobacco firm dispose. In blatant violation of Section 5 of COTPA (Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act) which bans direct and indirect advertisement of tobacco products, gutka-producing companies continue to illegally promote paan masala in various media and the authorities are looking the other way.

The tobacco lobby even got relief from the Bombay high court which banned the implementation of Section 5 of COTPA. However, the Supreme Court in January this year stayed the ban granted by the Bombay High Court. Subsequently, Union health and family welfare secretary Keshav Desiraju wrote to the chief secretaries of all the states to take steps for the implementation of rules.

With the WHO declaring TAPS (tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship) ban the theme for World No Tobacco Day this year, Bihar health secretary -cum- State Health Society executive director Sanjay Kumar wrote to all the DMs, asking them to launch a special campaign and revert to him by June 14. "... District-level steering committees have been constituted but regular meetings are not held and implementation of the above-mentioned rules (concerning TAPS) remains an issue of concern," his letter read.
