The award recognizes Newcastle City Council’s recent Declaration on Tobacco Control.
The declaration committed the council to take strong action to reduce smoking locally and also to protect public health policy from the commercial interests of the tobacco industry.
The council passed the declaration unanimously and having received the endorsement of the public health community is preparing the launch the declaration for other councils to sign up too in the autumn.
Newcastle has received this award from the Clear partnership, which works with local authorities across England to assess progress in reducing smoking.
Council leader Nick Forbes said: “In Newcastle we are determined to reduce the lost economic productivity and terrible human cost caused by tobacco.”
