Youth appeal to peers with 'truth' about big tobacco, smoking at Six Flags

Ari Williams' mother Gina said she thinks the Truth Tour, which was visiting Vallejo's Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Wednesday, is a "real good thing."

"They're getting the kids excited about not smoking," the Oakland resident said.

Ari Williams said she enjoyed playing a freeze-dance game and winning a T-shirt at the area of the park where the truthÆ youth smoking prevention tour set up with its big orange truck, games and DJ on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"I think it's about not smoking; about the dangers of smoking," the teen said.

In fact, it's more about "big tobacco" than about not smoking, per se, said tour member Jennifer Zeitlin of North Hollywood.

Tour participants talk to young people, and hand out free temporary tattoos, smartphone cases, skate decks and T-shirts, each containing one important tobacco industry "fact," she said.

"Every day about 3,500 youth try a cigarette for the first time, and one-third of those will die early as a result of tobacco-related illnesses," for instance. "Research shows more than 13.8 percent of California teens smoke," and "In the United States, about 88 percent of adult smokers start smoking by age 18. About 93 percent of smokers begin by age 20," are other examples.

The primary focus of the truth campaign is young people age 12 to 24.

The truck is outfitted with a DJ booth and sound system, iPads with the group's latest mobile game (Graffiti Collective) and a dance floor.
