OTTAWA — The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada is welcoming Ottawa's proposals to put larger, more explicit anti-smoking graphics on cigarette packages.
The foundation says when it comes to warning labels, size matters.
Health Canada has published proposed regulations and 16 images, giving Canadians 75 days to comment.
The labels would cover 75 per cent of the front and back of packages.
Current labels cover only 50 per cent of the pack.
Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq called the move an important step in getting people to quit when she announced the proposed changes last year.
Foundation CEO Bobbe Wood says that giving Canadians the straight-up goods on the dangers of tobacco use in a more prominent way is a significant step to reduce smoking.
The department hopes to have the new rules in place sometime this year.
