Assam possesses to be among few States in India to ban the circulation of tobacco products. The monsoon session of Assam Legislative Assembly had tabled and passed a bill prohibiting manufacture, advertisement, sale and consumption of various products containing tobacco in the State.
The State health & family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while tabling the Assam Health Prohibition of Manufacturing, Trade, Advertisement, Storage, Distribution Sale and Consumption of Zarda, Gutka, Panmasala etc containing tobacco) Bill, 2013 in the Assembly, asserted that Assam government endorses an improved public health status for its over 30 million population.
As the bill was passed by the State Assembly and it was sent to Raj Bhawan for approval, the anti-tobacco law would emerge prescribing punishments for its violators from monetary fine to imprisonments up to seven years.
