Area teen present in Montana to oppose big tobacco
Incoming senior at Northwestern High School, Tyler Maki, was chosen to participate as a presenter at the 7th National Smokeless and Spit Tobacco Summit at the University of Montana in Missoula, Mont. This was a three-day conference from Aug. 6 through 8.

Tyler and four other youth tobacco prevention members from across the state represented Wisconsin to health advocates and tobacco prevention professionals from across the country. Their session titled “Manipulicious: Wisconsin’s Youth Advocacy Campaign to Expose Big Tobacco’s Candy Coated Lies” was well attended early that Thursday afternoon. They were able to describe the efforts used to educate fellow high school students about the dangers of candy-flavored tobacco products. Tyler and his fellow tobacco prevention advocates explained how they participate as Youth Board Members for the program and assist in creating, marketing and implementing all related activities.

When asked to describe his experience Tyler said; “Over the three days that I was there I had a blast. I learned a lot of new things and plan to share them all with my community. Being at a conference like this was really cool because I was surrounded by 300 people who all had the same beliefs as me. Big Tobacco lies. We all agreed. We all agreed that Big Tobacco is targeting teens to use their new smokeless products. And we all agreed that Big Tobacco doesn't care about your health, they just want your money. Going to this conference in Montana was such a great experience and I will spread the knowledge to the best of my capabilities.”

A large congratulation goes out to Tyler and all the other youth participates for their hard work and dedication to keeping Wisconsin’s youth tobacco free!
