NAGPUR: City's Government Dental College and Hospital (GDCH) has been synonymous with anti-tobacco awareness. The college took a step further in this direction when all the 32 interns completed an online global tobacco control programme ( GTCP) training by John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA. The dean and teachers of GDCH will now also provide this training to students from other dental colleges in the city.
Dean Dr Vinay Hazarey was the first to do the course, and encouraged the teachers and students of the college to follow suit. The students were felicitated for the completion of the module on the occasion of National Oral Hygiene Day recently. Consisting of 11 training modules, the course touched upon topics like communication for tobacco control, role of health care professionals and tobacco control policies across the world.
"I see this as an iconic activity in the anti-tobacco movement. Ours is perhaps the first college where all students have done the course. We will soon also be formulating a role model to educate interns through such online training programmes in field of tobacco control and try to implement it for every dental institute across India, with the help of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and the Dental Council of India," Dr Hazarey said.
