Parents urged to tackle illegal tobacco sales
PARENTS in South Tyneside are being urged to help keep illegal tobacco off the streets.

Mums and dads who know where illegal cigarettes and tobacco are being sold to teenagers can call Crimestoppers anonymously.

The appeal comes from Fresh and South Tyneside Council, following work to successfully reduce the size of the illegal tobacco market in the North East since 2009.

Count Fay Cunningham, lead council member for health and well-being, said: “Sale of illegal tobacco is not a victimless crime.

“Children and young people are often targeted by dealers, putting them at risk of developing a harmful addiction.

“The illicit tobacco market is also strongly linked to organized crime, such as drug dealing and money laundering.

“I’d encourage any residents who have information about illegal tobacco to contact Crimestoppers in confidence.”

Anyone who knows where illegal tobacco is being sold can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or visit crimestoppers-uk.org.
