Doctors' group backs plain packaging for smokes

Posted Fri Apr 8, 2011 10:33am AEST

The Rural Doctors Association of Australia has welcomed a new Federal Government proposal to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes.

The Government has introduced legislation which will force tobacco companies to use plain green packaging with health labels.

Association president Paul Mara says regional areas have high rates of smoking and smoking-related illness and death.

He says the problem is particularly significant in lower socioeconomic communities.

"The health problems in these areas relating to smoking are quite high and we're concerned to ensure that we reduce the instances of smoking across the board," he said.

"To look at plain packaging and to highlight the health messages and the problems with health is very important."
