Man Dies in Tobacco Farm Mishap

A man has died while working on a tobacco farm in North Walsingham between Port Burwell and Port Dover.

Norfolk OPP, Norfolk County Fire, paramedics and an Ornge air ambulance were called at about 7 pm Monday, to a farm on Norfolk County Road 45.

OPP say a 56-year-old man was operating a three-wheeled fertilizer spreader through a tobacco field. A seasonal worker was riding as a passenger. For reasons not yet determined, the spreader continued past the end of a row and down a 75-ft embankment before overturning in a pond. The seasonal worker was able to jump from the spreader and run to a nearby farm for help.

The spreader operator was pronounced dead on the scene. His name is being withheld until next of kin are notified.

OPP, and the ministries of Labour and Environment are investigating.
