Hospital grab for tobacco excise hike
A PROPOSED increase in tobacco excise is set to spark the first health stoush between the Abbott government and the states, with Victoria demanding the revenue be used to return $1.4 billion in public hospital funding stripped by the former Gillard government.
As federal cabinet yesterday met to discuss a range of matters, including whether the excise changes proposed by Labor should be implemented, it emerged the Napthine government had already prepared a case to collect all or at least part of the extra tax that would be collected from smokers.
