Smokeout puts focus on ending use of tobacco

Think tobacco use is just another habit and no big deal? Think again. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, claiming roughly 440,000 lives per year in the United States alone. This equates to 1 in every 5 deaths. According to the CDC, smoke from tobacco contains over 7,000 chemicals, 70 of which are known carcinogens. Its no wonder tobacco claims so many lives.

The CDC also indicates that the majority of people addicted to tobacco start using by the age of 18, meaning that the Big Tobacco companies are marketing to our youth; just take a look at a convenience store next time you stop to get gas or buy a pack of gum. Pay attention to where the “latest and greatest” e-cigarettes or various spit tobacco products are located and what flavors they come in; they are often right next to packs of similar flavored gum and mints.
