Putnam Moves Closer To Banning Tobacco In Pharmacies
CARMEL, N.Y. – Putnam County moved a step closer to banning the sale of tobacco in pharmacies Tuesday, by approving the measure so it can be voted on in a full meeting of the County Legislature in October.

The measure’s most vocal advocate was legislator Sam Oliverio Jr., who said repeatedly throughout discussions in the Health & Protective Services committee meeting that government’s job, is to protect the health and welfare of its citizens, and anything that can be done to keep cigarettes out of the hands of kids should be done.

However, not everyone agreed. Several legislators argued that banning cigarette sales in pharmacies and keeping them from children are separate issues, and the ban may not have the impact legislators hoped it would.

“This is a troubling matter for me. I’ve seen family members smoke and die from cancer,” Legislator Barbara Scuccimarra said. “But I worry this is government taking too big a step. Of course we don’t want to see anybody smoking, but this does worry me.”
