65 fined for violation of anti-tobacco law

PATNA: The district tobacco control cell of Patna finally launched a drive to slap fine on the violators of Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act ( COTPA). As many as 65 challans were issued on Monday and Tuesday. While Rs 7,200 was realized by issuing 36 challans to smokers in Patna Sadar block, only Rs 1,060 could be realized by issuing 29 challans in various areas of the state capital for the violation of Sections 4 and 6 of the act. It may be mentioned here that as per the law, a violator of these two sections can be fined up to Rs 200.

Five challans were issued to young boys for the violation of Section 4. While one of them was fined Rs 100, the rest were issued challans of Rs 50 each. It may be mentioned here that Section 4 of the act prohibits public smoking and mandates that managers of all public places, including offices, restaurants and cinema halls, among other places, have to put a signage that smoking is prohibited there.
