Philip Morris has hired a prominent stall in the exhibition hall at Labour’s annual conference in Brighton, at a cost believed to run to several thousand pounds.
Labour agreed to sell exhibition space to the two organizations despite fiercely criticizing the Tories for their alleged links to the tobacco industry.
But Diane Abbott, the shadow public health minister, said she and Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham were unhappy about their party’s arrangement.
She said Mr. Burnham tried to ban big tobacco companies at Labour's conference but was overruled by the party headquarters.
“On selling exhibition space to big tobacco, the health team led by Andy Burnham did make representations to the party about this and we were not able to get that changed,” Ms. Abbott told a fringe meeting in Brighton. “But the health team is not happy.”
