Campaign to help tobacco users quit
The anti-tobacco coalition encourages people to stop smoking or using other tobacco products this year. Free coaching, nicotine patches and other help is available through “Break Away from the Pack!”
The Oklahoma County Tobacco Use Prevention Coalition is offering free assistance for anyone who wants to stop smoking or using other tobacco products.
The coalition has joined the “Break Away from the Pack!” campaign to encourage tobacco users to make quitting their No. 1 New Year’s resolution — and to stick with it. Billboards, park benches and posters on horse-drawn carriages in Bricktown feature the “Break Away” message and information about a free service that can make quitting easier.
The Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline offers one-on-one coaching, specialized materials, free nicotine patches or gum, and referrals to community resources.
Call (800) 784-8669 for English or (800) 793-1552 for Spanish. The service is free for all Oklahomans.
Tobacco kills more Oklahomans than alcohol, auto accidents, AIDS, suicides, murders and illegal drugs combined.
Exposure to secondhand smoke causes heart disease, cancers, sudden infant death syndrome, asthma attacks, bronchitis and pneumonia.
“That means if you make a resolution to quit smoking, you’re not just doing something for yourself. You’re taking a step that can help to improve the health of everyone around you,” Jane Sutter, coalition chairwoman, said in a news release.
