The number of high school students who have used flavored tobacco products is "troubling" and new legislation banning the sale of it is needed immediately, the Canadian Cancer Society says.
In the 2012/13 Youth Smoking Survey, 50% of high school students who had used tobacco products in the 30 days before being polled said they had used flavored tobacco products, which can include cigarillos, water pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff and menthol cigarettes.
Boys were slightly more likely than girls to use flavored tobacco products, 53% compared to 46%. As well, 29% of those using flavored products said they smoked menthol cigarettes.
The survey of 47,203 students in every province except Manitoba and the territories was conducted between Nov. 2012 and June 2013 by researchers at the University of Waterloo and released Wednesday by the society. It also showed 12% of students had smoked cigarettes in the 30 days before the poll and 18% had used tobacco products in general.
