Remove tobacco related ads from buses, admin to operators

People consuming tobacco products at public places to be fined Rs 200.

With a view to check display of advertisements of pan masala and tobacco-related products on public transportation buses, the district administration has issued notices to the bus operators asking them to remove the advertisements within 15 days. 

SDM Sandeep Soni, nodal officer for implementation of Tobacco Control Act -2003 said, "Apart from putting a ban on tobacco products and smoking, the administration will check publicity of these products and even the advertisement of pan masala."

"Starting from government departments, we will remove the advertisements of pan masala from city buses. Notices are being served to operators and the advertisements will be removed soon", said Soni. 

He further said that prohibitory notices have been displayed at all government offices and instructions have been given to HoDs in this regard. A penalty of Rs 200 will be slapped on those who are found smoking or consuming tobacco products at public places. 

"The advertisements of cigarettes will be reduced to 45 cm X 30 cm. Action will be taken against concerned if advertisements of cigarettes are found greater than the specified size in cigarette shops," informed Soni. 

He informed that a workshop has been convened for implementation of the provisions of Tobacco Control Act on September 16. The objective of the workshop is to sensitize people about the Tobacco Control Act.

"Apart from government officers, the representatives of hotels, restaurants, malls, hospitals, commercial offices, etc. will participate in the workshop," added Soni.
