Tobacco Tax Hike Gets Support from National Asthma Council Australia

The Federal Government's proposal to increase taxes on Tobacco has gathered support from the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and National Asthma Council Australia.

Stephen Hughes is Director of National Asthma Council and a community pharmacist representing the PSA on the Council's Board. He said the move will play a significant role in deriving better health outcomes for all Australians and providing people a better chance of achieving good asthma control.

It was revealed by Pharmacy News last Thursday that government made an announcement to impose a $5.25 tax hike on a 20 pack of cigarette.

The tobacco tax rise was welcomed by Kos Sclavos, Guild national president. However, he said the government should devise strict measures to ban smoking, and not bank on small fraction of $5.3 billion revenue, the hike in taxes will create. The hike in tax will only reduce the rates of smoking, and that too a very small extent, which is not the actual goal.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said it is high time to introduce strict laws on tobacco as addiction kills at least 15,000 Australians a year. Tobacco is known to kill more people than the combine death toll from road accidents, illicit drugs, alcohol, murder, AIDS, diabetes and skin cancer.
