Staff Reports --
Weld County - This year the community will join together to celebrate the Great American Smokeout on Thursday November 17, 2011. Millions of people make the pledge to quit tobacco every year during the Great American Smokeout, and it can be the first step to successfully quit tobacco for good.
The Great American Smokeout is an initiative of the American Cancer Society that raises awareness and challenges people to stop using tobacco for even one day. A small success with one day of quitting can lead to a life free of tobacco. Weld County residents will have the opportunity to speak to a Tobacco Education Specialist and receive free quit kits on November 17 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment, 1555 N. 17thAvenue in Greeley. From 12:15 to 12:45pm a free learning-to-quit class will also be conducted with light refreshments
Beginning Wednesday, November 30 until December 21, a special holiday quit class will also be offered free of charge each Wednesday night from 6:00pm to 7:30pm held at Zoe’s Café 715 10th Street, Greeley, CO 80631. Light refreshments will be served at these classes. Participants who complete all four classes in the series will receive not only the gift of better health but also a gift card just in time for the holidays! Please call 970-304-6470 x2389 or email mhanson@co.weld.co.us to register for this class.
Another resource to help Weld County residents quit tobacco is the Colorado QuitLine. The Colorado QuitLine is a service which offers free coaching and up to eight weeks of free nicotine patches or gum for callers 18 and older. Call the Colorado QuitLine at 1-800-QUIT-NOW or register at www.coquitline.org. Many people who have called the Colorado QuitLine report success when combining the coaching with the nicotine replacement therapy.
Tobacco still remains the number one cause of preventable death and disease in the nation and world. Do your part to encourage a friend, loved one or yourself to quit tobacco for a day, and then quit for life. Join with us for the Great American Smokeout!
