Letter: Stop lawmakers from accepting tobacco money
The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) has recently launched a campaign to “Snuff Tobacco Money out of California Politics.” ACS CAN is challenging current officeholders and candidates for all state offices to reject contributions from tobacco companies and their subsidiaries and return to an agenda that promotes public health.
Over the past five years, tobacco companies have spent $63 million on campaign contributions and lobbying in California. During that time, the tobacco companies have successfully stymied every significant legislative effort that would have helped people quit tobacco use, prevented youth from starting, or protected people from second-hand smoke.
The industry of addiction and deception has a stranglehold on the Legislature and it is time to change that. Letters have been sent to every officeholder and candidate for the state legislature and statewide office asking “Will you reject campaign contributions from tobacco companies and stand with ACS CAN and help us snuff tobacco money out of California politics?”
Campaign contributions will be monitored and made public.
