Health Ministry tightens belt against tobacco consumption, smoking

After the ban on Gutkha consumption in 13 states, health ministry is paving its way to provide awareness on the harmful effects of tobacco and smoking too. Anti-tobacco health spots of minimum 30 seconds are to be displayed at the beginning and middle of the films displaying tobacco products or their use.

Also, an audio-visual disclaimer of minimum 20 seconds on the ill-effects of tobacco use is to be displayed in the beginning and middle of the films displaying tobacco products or their use. The Ministry of Health has agreed to bear the cost of these disclaimers.

Way back in 2004, when the first prohibition against tobacco advertisement was implied, India’s leading tobacco maker, ITC, slid down on profit share to 80% from 90%. Since then, the company’s revenue share too, has declined to 57% from a 72%. The then Ministry of Health mandated the U\A certification for films showing consumption of tobacco.

With the lowest consumption of cigarettes in the world, India seems to be waking up to a healthier environment.
