DCH hospitals to go tobacco free Jan. 1
TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - DCH Health System hospitals will be tobacco free in 2014.
The hospital's Director of Employee Health says they have a responsibility to ensure a healthy environment for employees and patients.
There has been a ban on indoor smoking but now that will extend to most of the hospitals' properties. There are two designated areas where people may smoke but some are still concerned about the dangers of second hand smoke.
People supporting the measure point out those smoking increases the chances of hospitalization and delays healing time for patients already in DCH's care.
"We've gotten input for months now. And we've heard from employees and we've heard from administration. Again, we're not alone in our efforts because this is a trend that's nationwide where hospitals and businesses are going tobacco-free," Felicia Ellison with DCH said.
DCH hospitals in Tuscaloosa, Northport and Fayette go smoke free Jan. 1, 2014.
