Health ministry to crack down on tobacco sale near schools, hospitals
NEW DELHI: In a bid to rein in supply and distribution of tobacco products, the health ministry will write to states seeking stringent action against kiosks selling these products near schools, hospitals and government buildings in violation of laws.
States have so far been tardy in implementation of the 'Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act penalizing 1.03 lakh people in the last one year. Many states have either not penalized any offenders or not bothered to provide data.
