City hosts Bikeathon for a tobacco-free society
Riding their Harley Davidsons and other superbikes with anti-tobacco placards, participants at the Bikeathon for World No Tobacco Day attempted to create awareness about the ill effects of tobacco.

Starting off at Cubbon Park, a team of bikes covered a 17 Km stretch from Queen’s Circle through Town Hall, Mysore Road and Rajarajeshwari Nagar and reached BGS Global Hospitals on Uttarahalli Road.

V B Patil, Commissioner, Department of Health and Family Welfare flagged off the bikeathon. He said that the bikeathon is one of the various methods the department is trying to reduce the use of tobacco in the state.

“We are looking at controlling the serious health problems caused due to tobacco use and also plan to tie up with private hospitals and NGOs towards this cause,” he noted. He added that the department is ensuring that when Education Department officials are inspecting schools, they should see that there is no tobacco use around 100 meters near the schools, and are also tying up with the police to make the measures more stringent.

Dr N K Venkataramana, Vice-chairman and Chief Neurosurgeon, BGS Global Hospitals, encouraged youth to say ‘No’ when they are offered tobacco. “We have tied up with the anti-tobacco cell and are working on models involving NGOs, and individuals working in fields of human resources and health care to implement anti-tobacco campaigns,” he told reporters.
