Doctors from across medical specialties discussed the ills of chewing tobacco or smoking at the state-level freshers’ course organised by the Lucknow chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Friday. “People chewing tobacco are more susceptible to oral cancer and these group should
be extra careful about their eating habits,” said Dr AA Sonkar, dean of general surgery at King George’s Medical University (KGMU).
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Sonkar said self-examination of oral cancer was possible.
“While brushing one can check if his/her mouth is opening normally or is there a change in the gap between upper and lower jaw. If there is change is there also some difficulty in opening the mouth? If there is some difficulty one must get medical aid,” he said.
“Besides the mouth space one should also watch out if there are changes in the head and neck area,” Dr Sonkar added.
Lucknow College of Surgeons secretary Dr Vinod Jain also delivered a talk on medical ethics and the current legal issues in medical practice. Dr Jain highlighted that legal issues in medical practice are an important part of patient care where “both the patient and the doctor have certain rights that need to be honoured.”
“While treating a patient a doctor should keep in mind that he or she is doing service to the mankind and should never shun medical ethics for cheap personal gains,” he added.
Later in the day, Dr Anand Mishra presented a lecture on management of multinodular goiter.
