E-Cig poison calls double in Tampa Bay

The Florida Poison Information Center has seen an increase in calls this year from potential poisoning from E-Cigarette liquid refill packets.

The refills contain varying amounts of nicotine and can be dangerous. Many refill packets are colorful and scented, and some children may mistake them for something safe to eat.

"I think it's only a matter of time before we see some serious poisonings," said Alfred Aleguas, managing director of the Florida Poison Information Center in Tampa. The center has seen calls to poison control for possible poisonings double this year. From January to October of 2013 the center received a total of 15 calls about e-cigarette products. During the same time in 2014 the center has received 32 calls.

A person who ingested nicotine may experience pain or begin to shake. There is also a danger for more serious issues like seizures.

Senator Bill Nelson wants companies selling the refill liquid to install child safety caps, similar to what is found on cold medicine bottles.
