Russian Federation at the forefront of tobacco control
The 1st of June 2014, marked the anniversary of the date that the Russian Federation implemented the second set of measures under the comprehensive tobacco control law passed last year. These measures tighten up the legislation passed in 2013 making all hospitality venues - cafes, bars, restaurants, hotels, and long-distance transportation - 100% smoke free; as well as banning all point of sale displays and tobacco sales from kiosks.
According to the Ministry of Health, the law has already impacted consumption since its entry into force in 2013, with recent data showing a decrease by 16-17% and smoking prevalence among high school students decreased from 23% to 19.5 %. This is consistent with reports of decreased sales of tobacco products. There are also indications of a decrease in mortality from cardiovascular disease in January and February 2014.
