No Limits to target Big Tobacco
No Limits, Nebraska’s youth-led tobacco prevention movement, is now accepting applications for the No Limits Fall Summit, November 22–23 at the Leadership Center in Aurora. The Summit is open to Nebraska youth ages 12–18, in grades 7–12. Participants will develop strategies to fight the marketing tactics of tobacco companies in their own schools and communities.
No Limits Youth Board members chose “People over Profits” as the theme for the Fall Summit. Sessions will examine how Big Tobacco values profits over the health of young people by using deceptive tactics to influence more teens to use tobacco.
“The tobacco industry needs new customers to stay in business,” said Molly Kincaid, No Limits project coordinator. “At the No Limits Fall Summit participants see how tobacco companies target teens through products and packaging that appeal to young people.”
The Fall Summit helps participants develop leadership and communications skills as they work together to prevent tobacco use among their peers.
“No Limits has shown me how we, as young people, can have a positive impact on our communities,” said Joanna Hejl, No Limits Youth Board member. “It’s exciting to be part of a group that empowers youth to have a positive impact across Nebraska.”
The No Limits Fall Summit is free for accepted applicants and includes transportation to and from Aurora. Groups are encouraged to have an adult sponsor, but sponsors are not required. Applications must be submitted by October 22, 2014. More information and application forms are available at www.NoLimitsNebraska.com or by contacting Kincaid at 866-FYI-TEEN (866-394-8336) or info@NoLimitsNebraska.com.
