City considers near-ban on tobacco and alcohol in parks
City-owned parks could become almost tobacco and alcohol free following a proposal by the Tehachapi Police Dept.
The first reading of a proposed ordinance establishing the restrictions took place at the June 17 meeting of the Tehachapi City Council.
As proposed by the Police Department the ordinance would make it unlawful to possess or consume alcoholic beverages unless a permit is issued for an event that allows for alcohol. It would also be unlawful to smoke, chew, or use in any other way any tobacco product at any time in these locations. Violations would be cited as infractions with a $100 fine on the first offense and could be cited as misdemeanors for subsequent offenses.
