E-cigarettes should be regulated like tobacco products, groups say

Two local groups have teamed up to call on the Newfoundland and Labrador government to place regulations on the sale of electronic cigarettes in the province.

The NL Federation of School Councils and the NL Alliance for the Control of Tobacco said e-cigarettes are possible gateways for young people to start smoking.

NLFSC President Peter Whittle said in a statement released on Tuesday that research shows that there are health risks associated with smoking the plastic cigarettes.

The groups are asking that e-cigarettes fall under the same regulatory controls which are in place for tobacco products.

Those regulations include restricting cigarette advertising, banning the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and putting an age restriction on e-cigarette sales.

The NLFSC and ACT said it hopes to meet with the Health Minister to discuss potential legislation.
