Concerted action to reduce tobacco use in Kerala

The Union Home Affairs Ministry has asked the State to take a coordinated approach and social, economic, educational and legal measures to reduce consumption of tobacco in view of the increasing health hazards.

“The field formations of the security apparatus also need to be sensitized to contain the menace,” Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami said in a letter to the State Police Chief and Director General of Police (DGP) of other States.

The State Police Chief has also been asked to “take personal attention” to ensure that all the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce Production, Supply and Distribution) Act (COTPA) of 2003 are “implemented strictly.”
