Shops caught in tobacco sting

Tobacco sellers across Wellington and the Hutt Valley have been busted selling the product to minors.

Five stores in the Hutt Valley were visited by an undercover volunteer. Two sold tobacco to the underage participant.

Another two in Wellington and the Kapiti Coast sold the products without asking for identification, out of 15 tested. Those caught faced a $1000 fine.

Eleven of the 20 retailers that were tested had previously sold tobacco to a minor in the last year. None of those re-tested failed a second time.

The wider Wellington region had the worst results of the wider lower North Island sting. Two out of 29 retailers in Wanganui sold to the underage volunteer, though all stores in the Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay asked for identification.
