There is no guarantee of safety with the e-cigaretteElectronic cigarettes are thought by many to be a healthier alternative to smoking real cigarettes as they do not involve inhaling tobacco smoke, says Cancer Research. However, unlike other 'Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency' (MHRA) approved nicotine replacement products, such as certain types of patches and gums; there is as yet no guarantee that these products are safe.
It is widely believed that smokers are attracted to the e-cigarette because it is very like a tobacco cigarette. It has the same shape and is held in the same way, and most allow you to inhale a nicotine infused mist which creates a realistic 'cloud of smoke' when exhaled. It's easy to see why reliant smokers would favour this over other methods.
The report states that there are not enough regulations on the marketing of e-cigarette products. For instance, it comments that the product should not be marketed to non-smokers or young people, and debate whether it is ethical at all to promote an addictive, non-MHRA approved product.
There is also a danger that marketing of this increasingly popular product may be "exploited by vested interests", says professor Gerard Hastings, Institute for Social Marketing (ISM). “It is vital that the tobacco control movement agrees a unified strategy to address these developments".
A similar report from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) on harm reduction approaches to smoking outlines that although any approved method which helps people to quit altogether is a good thing, "There is much less evidence on the effectiveness, safety and quality of other nicotine-containing products, such as electronic cigarettes, topical gels, and other products in development". NICE does add, however, that e-cigarettes are "likely to be less harmful than cigarettes".
The MHRA are at the moment considering whether to regulate e-cigarettes
