Moving towards a cigarette-free Australia
16/07/2012 , 9:12 AM by Hannah Thompson

Local health educator Dr Craig Dalton wants to stop the health warnings, high taxes and plain packaging for cigarettes because it's time to set an end date for smoking.

New Zealand and Finland have set end dates for the sale of cigarettes, and the University of Newcastle Conjoint Lecturer told Jill that he thinks that we should follow suit.

He says it's not about free choice as modern cigarettes have already taken away that choice by being scientifically as addictive as they can possibly be.

Dr Dalton also believes that the big supermarkets should take more responsibility for selling the products.

"There's no difference between the big tobacco companies and the retailers that sell them - they choose to sell cigarettes," he said.

"From the calculations that I did in 2004, my estimates are that they were killing about 1600 Australians a year through the volume of tobacco they're selling."
