While the skeptic may view CVS Caremark's decision not to sell tobacco products at its stores as a publicity grab or a nod to the looming presence of insurance providers, the more-informed observer realizes that this is a corporation coming to terms with its mission and direction. If CVS Caremark’s purpose, as stated on its website, is to assure that “every day, we’re working to make health care better,” there was no other choice to be made.
Thanks to this singular move, CVS Caremark establishes newfound credibility as well as a legacy of social responsibility. In an era when doing the right thing is sometimes overshadowed by other considerations, CVS Caremark has shown a willingness to be a part of the solution to overcoming our country’s struggle with tobacco use.
