City councilor proposes tobacco ban at parks

SANTA FE (KRQE) – A Santa Fe City Councilor is aiming to outlaw smoking in all city parks including the Santa Fe Plaza.

The councilor wants to ban not only cigarettes, but e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco which is stirring up controversy.

Santa Fe City Councilor Ron is behind the proposal and says he knows there’s a long way to go before this ban could become reality.

“I’ve had parents at some of the baseball games come up to me and tell me right out, look Ron, someone’s smoking right there. That’s not good for the kids,” Trujillo said.

Trujillo introduced legislation at Wednesday’s city council meeting banning smoking in public parks.

It’s an idea that sits well with a lot of people.

“I think it’s fantastic. I think it’s a place obviously where children go and it’s great if they can go there and not be exposed to second hand smoke,” said Soma Franks.

But Trujillo also wants to ban e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco from city parks some say that’s taking it way too far.

“E-cigs shouldn’t be a problem. I don’t see why it should be. It’s out in the open,” said Rebecca Lopez.

Trujillo says e-cigarettes have already been a polarizing issue.

One councilor is now reconsidering her support of the ban because of the inclusion of e-cigarettes. But he says he’s open to compromise

Another big issue with this proposal is enforcement.

Trujillo says he knows they can’t have a police officer or code enforcement stationed in city parks but he hopes people would respect no smoking signs.

Trujillo was also behind the successful push earlier this year to place the same restrictions on e-cigarettes that are already on regular cigarettes.
