West Cornwall retailers praised after refusing to sell tobacco to youths

It said that none of the nine shops surveyed sold products to the youngsters, with all premises asking for ID.

“We are very pleased with the outcome of the underage sales operation. It shows that retailers are taking their responsibilities seriously," she said.

Cornwall Council cabinet member Geoff Brown said: “This clearly demonstrates the vigilance of our trading standards team in protecting our young people. I would also pay tribute to the very responsible retailers who operate such well run businesses in Cornwall.”

To purchase tobacco legally in the UK the customer must be 18 and have valid proof of identification.

Trading Standards said it is now looking for volunteers to take part in future test purchasing. If you are aged between 14-16 and have your parent’s/guardian’s approval to take part, email businesscompliance@cornwall.gov.uk
