Centura hospitals institute tobacco ban

ARDEN CITY, Kansas – Starting in January, Centura hospitals (a network of hospitals), including Saint Catherine in Garden City will not hire smokers.

“As the region’s leading health care system committed to improving the health of those we serve, it is important that we first serve as a role model for our communities by promoting the benefits of health and wellness,” said Centura’s Strategic Communication Manager Jennifer Wills.

Existing employees are exempt, but anyone hired after the New Year will have to submit to a tobacco screening. If a potential employee fails the screening they won’t be given the job, but they do have the opportunity to test again, they just have to wait 90 days. Once individuals are hired they don’t have to continue testing.

While this practice isn’t widely used in the state, it is legal.
