Arlene Bender knows how hard it is to quit smoking.
A smoker for more than 40 years, she tried going cold turkey. She tried hypnosis, acupuncture, even medication. Nothing worked. She still smokes 15 Marlboro cigarettes a day.
That's why at the Feb. 19 meeting of the North Hills School Board, she voted to include electronic or smokeless cigarettes among the prohibited tobacco products on school property and school buses for students. But she cast the sole dissenting vote — board member Tom Kelly was absent — against five other policies that prevent various employees, administrators and visitors from using electronic cigarettes on North Hills School District property.
“I do understand and know people who use the electronic cigarettes, and it has helped them quit smoking,” she said.
